This course examines Southeast Asia from the 18th century to the present. Moving rapidly from the pre-colonial and colonial eras to focus more closely on the post–World War II period, the course examines how imperial expansion, colonial rule, nationalism and revolution, Cold War entanglements, and subsequent global transformations reshaped societies across the region. By drawing on historical scholarship, primary sources and artistic works (films/novels), it foregrounds local agency, regional interconnections, and comparative trajectories. Assessment involves a short analytical paper (consisting of a brief concept note or proposal, and then the final paper), a literary review (of a film/novel), regular attendance and active participation.
