The department provides financial awards for domestic students. The current minimum financial award is approximately $16,000 for first year MA students and $25,000 per year for domestic doctoral students (4 years).
Financial awards come from a combination of funding programs and awards:
- 91TV's Graduate Awards (QGAs)
- Internal 91TV's Fellowships and Awards
- External scholarships such as the Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's and Ontario Graduate Scholarship
- Teaching assistantships (TA-ships) in undergraduate courses
- Graduate Research Assistantships with Faculty (GRAs)
- Graduate Research Fellowships (GRFs)
Funding for Thesis-Stream MA Students (second-year)
The department aims to provide financial awards to MA students who are accepted into the two-year thesis stream, but cannot guarantee second-year funding at the same level as year one.
We encourage students to prepare early in the fall for their application to convert to the thesis-stream option, and to apply for a , if eligible, at this time.
We also encourage our eligible continuing students to apply for an Ontario Graduate Scholarship in January.
Other sources of external funding can be found on SGSPA website, but there are many others through individual ministries, governments or embassies, development-oriented NGO's and charitable organizations.
Funding for International Students
International applicants to the PhD program in Global Development Studies must secure a written commitment of supervision and funding from a DEVS faculty member before applying, as funding is limited and the program is highly competitive. Applications without a confirmed supervisor will not be considered.
The department is currently unable to offer financial packages to international MA applicants.
Teaching Assistantships
Teaching Assistantships (TA-ships) require up to a maximum of 10 hours a week/120 hours per term of tutorial leadership, preparation, marking, and other duties.
Funding packages normally include two TA-ships but this may be reduced if a student receives additional internal or external awards.
TA-ships are an important source of funding, as well as an important element in the student's professional development.
External Funding Awards
Eligible applicants should apply for appropriate external awards. Information on these and other awards may be obtained from the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs.
The competition provides MA students with $27,000 for 12 months (non-renewable).
Incoming students (Canadian citizens or permanent residents) with a minimum A- (80%) standing in their last two years of study, should apply for the CGS-M before submitting their application to the DEVS MA Program.
Continuing eligible MA students who have been admitted to the thesis-stream MA program are also encouraged to apply.

The program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.
Eligible prospective students should apply in advance of submitting their application to DEVS.
